Subaru Crosstrek- Review- 2023

The 2023 Subaru Crosstrek is a tiny crossover, yet one might easily mistake it for a modified off-road hatchback. That is unsurprising, given that this vehicle is a raised and more competent off-road Impreza hatchback. Subaru sells four Crosstreks for every Impreza, even though the Crosstrek has long ago outperformed its lower-riding sibling. Outdoor enthusiasts and those looking for all-weather performance at a reasonable price have long valued it as a top option. It has three possible engines, one of which is a plug-in hybrid and one of the last crossovers with a manual gearbox.

Since a new Crosstrek won’t be available until 2024, there aren’t many upgrades this year. The Jeep Renegade is one option, but many others, such as the Ford Bronco Sport, Honda HR-V, Kia Seltos, and Mazda CX-30, have more modern looks. Some models, such as the Bronco Sport and CX-30, have much more power. Few, though, have the Crosstrek’s tough exterior, and hardly any have its impressively high ground clearance (8.7 inches, to be precise). Although it can’t climb rocks like a Jeep Wrangler, the Crosstrek’s enhanced capability enables drivers to reach their preferred camping spots, trailheads, or ski resorts much more quickly.

The 2.0-litre boxer four-cylinder engine that powers the base Crosstrek is connected to a continuously variable automatic gearbox (CVT) or a 6-speed manual transmission, producing 152 horsepower and 145 pound-feet of torque. The 2.5-litre boxer four-cylinder engine in the Sport and higher models produces 182 horsepower and 176 lb-ft of torque. For 148 horsepower, those choosing the hybrid model get a 2.0-litre gas engine coupled with an electric motor. The Hybrid has a shorter all-electric range than many other PHEVs, at just 17 miles.

Most 2.0-powered non-Hybrid Crosstreks don’t have much oomph, but versions with the manual gearbox seem more vibrant. Crosstreks provide a quiet, smooth ride without excessive wind or traffic noise. Although the seats are firm, the suspension effectively absorbs rough roads, potholes, and bumps, making them excellent commuter and runabout vehicles. Even if the infotainment system is beginning to seem dated, the Crosstrek is still a sensible pick.

The 2.0-litre engine in Crosstreks only produces 152 horsepower, which doesn’t provide much torque. Due to this, merging and passing on two-lane highways requires careful planning and may sometimes be unpleasant. Driving the Crosstrek is more enjoyable with the six-speed manual gearbox than with the CVT, albeit it isn’t offered on all trim levels. The Sport variant is the one to get if you don’t care about the manual but want greater oomph. Fuel efficiency: Subaru Crosstrek

The average combined fuel efficiency for all models (except the Hybrid) is 28 mpg, which is typically on par with or better than that of its rivals in the class. The figures vary from 22 mpg city for Crosstreks with manual transmissions to 34 mpg highway for Sport versions powered by the 2.5-litre engine. The Crosstrek is a frugal companion since these figures are closer to those of the front-wheel drive compact crossover competitors.

The AWD ’23 Kia Seltos averages 28, and the Ford Bronco Sport averages 24.2 throughout the range. The Honda HR-V AWD gets a combined average of 27 mpg. Of course, you may choose the Crosstrek Hybrid, a PHEV small crossover that offers up to 90 MPGe. Although it costs more than the other Crosstreks, the PHEV is noticeably less costly than more oversized plug-in vehicles like the Hyundai Tucson PHEV or Toyota RAV4 Prime and the high-end Mini Countryman Plug-in.

Safety and driver support technology:

Crosstrek had excellent results in crash testing. The ’22 Crosstrek received a five-star safety rating from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), and the ’23 vehicles are most likely to get the same grade. The ’23 model has been named a Top Safety Pick by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).

You have a highly secure and practical option when you combine this with Subaru’s EyeSight, Starlink, a plethora of airbags throughout the interior, blind spot monitoring, lane departure alerts, adaptive cruise control with lane centring, and other features. One warning: choosing the manual gearbox disqualifies you from using numerous driver assistance functions, such as EyeSight and X-Mode. More than 90% of Crosstreks are automatics with EyeSight, which would typically result in a rating reduction since EyeSight is an option rather than a standard feature.

Comfort and Space

Despite its small size, the Crosstrek provides a surprising amount of room and comfort. The format of the Impreza on which it is based prevents it from having as much back legroom as, for instance, the new Honda HR-V or Kia Seltos. Nevertheless, it has more excellent front legroom than those vehicles. Even if the back is crowded, the heated front seats are supportive and comfy for lengthy drives. On the Limited and Hybrid trim levels, leather-trimmed upholstery is an option. Sport variants are covered with water-repellent StarTex.

The dials, knobs, and switches are simple to use and have a premium feel. Subaru also provides a large selection of accessories to increase comfort and make the most of space. This includes seat coverings, cargo organization, and all-weather floor mats.

Infotainment:Subaru Crosstrek

A 6.5-inch multimedia screen is standard on the Base, Premium, and Sport variants. The Forester-shared, bigger 8.0-inch screen is available when you upgrade to the Limited or Hybrid. Except for the basic model, which is devoid of XM Radio functionality and only comes with four speakers (the other versions receive six), all models are equipped with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and accessible satellite radio, Bluetooth, USB, and auxiliary connections. The 8.0-inch screen Premium and Hybrid variants include NFC, voice-activated controls, and other features.

Compared to the larger 8.0-inch screen and other of the Crosstrek’s more recently updated rivals, the smaller 6.5-inch screen appears outdated and undersized. A better standard audio system with at least six speakers is also provided for almost all other entrants in this class. However, the Subaru system is simple to use and doesn’t need a degree in computer science.

In case you were curious, the gauge cluster on the Crosstrek consists of a centre-mounted digital display in addition to an analogue speedometer and tachometer. There is also a digital display on the dash, although it seems outdated compared to some of the more up-to-date competitors.

Storage & Cargo Space:

Most small crossovers are adaptable regarding towing, but the Crosstrek has less total cargo space than many of its rivals. 20.8 cubic feet of cargo space can be found behind the back seats, and 55.3 with the seats folded. The 2023 Honda HR-V is somewhat larger overall but has 24.4 cubic feet and 55.1 in comparison. However, the Mazda CX-30 has less cargo space than the Crosstrek (20.2 vs. 45.2, respectively). Despite being shorter overall (172.7 inches), the Bronco Sport has ideal space (29.4 and 60.6).

There is sufficient storage for phones, wires, and devices, but nothing impressive. You won’t be astounded, but you won’t be left wanting more.

Do you need an additional room? And then focus on the roof. Roof racks that store baggage, bicycles, skis, and other items may be attached to Crosstrek’s basic roof rails. Yes, Subaru does sell a lot of them as factory extras.

The Crosstrek’s appearance is rougher than its rival tall crossovers but also more balanced, making it seem more like a raised hatchback than an average tall crossover. It has a “station wagon” appearance rather than a “mini SUV.” Since the Impreza XV era, the Crosstrek’s exterior hasn’t altered much, and Subaru hasn’t tampered with success for ’23. It will undoubtedly continue to be a favourite among outdoor enthusiasts who don’t want the bigger Outback but need a vehicle capable of navigating rough terrain. While many CUVs tend to blend in, the Crosstrek stands out.

Despite having a low body, it has a posture that defies that due to its wide ground clearance. It has the excellent build quality and seems well-finished. The automobile is sturdy and devoid of rattling throughout. Several black external plastics exist, including over-the-wheel arches, as on many CUVs. Crosstrek’s interior is drab and functional, but customers like that.

The Subaru Crosstrek 2023: Is It Worth It?

Every Crosstrek, except the Hybrid, is reasonably priced and a fantastic value. There are a ton of rivals from almost every manufacturer fighting for Crosstrek consumers, regardless of the trim they choose. The Subaru Crosstrek is less costly to insure than most of its competitors. Statistics show that the top-trim Crosstrek Limited will cost an average yearly premium of $1,760 for a typical 30-year-old female driver with a clean driving record; all other variants would cost less. Comparatively, a Mazda CX-30 Turbo costs $1,862, a Hyundai Kona SEL costs $1,774, and a Kia Seltos EX costs $1,829 for the same features.

Verdict

The 2023 Subaru Crosstrek is a unique blend of rugged design, strength, and adaptability. Although not the quickest option, the optional 2.5-litre engine keeps it competitive and achieves comparable fuel economy to other small CUVs. A plug-in hybrid model is also available, which has outstanding fuel efficiency. Thanks to an impressive 8.7 inches of ground clearance and standard all-wheel drive, it makes up for what it loses in speed in all-weather (and all-road) performance. Even though it offers cutting-edge safety measures, the basic infotainment is outdated, and the cargo room is, at best, middle of the pack. Although the Crosstrek is cosy and has a distinctive look for the class, a new design is scheduled for 2024.
