About Land Rover

Land Rover produces some of the world’s most popular and effective sport utility vehicles. The brand’s sveltely styled SUVs are among the most off-road capable cars on the market, packed with high-tech equipment and opulent luxuries.

The Rover Company constructed the original Land Rovers as a sport utility vehicle (SUV) before the term “SUV” existed. They were modelled after military Jeeps used during World War II and were intended for use on farms and in war-torn regions. In 1948, the Land Rover Series I made its debut. It had a boxy design, four-wheel drive, and a steering wheel located in the middle.

In 1978, the Land Rover company was established. Before that, it was only one of many product lines in Rover’s line-up. Still, it had a solid reputation for form-follows-function design principles and without any extraneous frills. Its well-liked value proposition ultimately assisted in consolidating the brand into a single entity.

British commercial vehicle manufacturer Layland Motor Corporation acquired ownership of Rover Company and British carmaker Triumph in the 1960s to enter the automobile industry. In 1968, Layland combined with British Motor Holdings to form the new, nationalized British Leyland Motor Corporation, which included Rover and Triumph. British Leyland (formerly known as British Leyland) split out the Land Rover marque as a separate business in the middle of the 1970s due to the brand’s enduring appeal. However, BL had financial issues, ultimately leading to the business’s dissolution and re-privatization. In 1988, Land Rover and the Rover Company came under the management of British Aerospace.

BMW purchased Rover Company in 1994. It split off Land Rover in 2000 and sold it to Ford. Both businesses were independent up until Ford bought Range Rover in 2006. Ford, which also owned Land Rover and Jaguar Cars, stated in 2007 that it would sell those brands. India-based Tata Motors was chosen as the winning bidder in 2008. In the agreement, Rover was also acquired by Tata.

Until 2013, when Tata reorganized and consolidated the brands, renaming the parent company Jaguar Land Rover Automotive, Jaguar and Land Rover continued to function as independent businesses under the holding company Jaguar Land Rover Limited.
