About MINI

Fuel economy, precise handling, and a quirky attitude are just a few examples of the excellent things that come in little packaging, according to the sleek, well-liked premium brand MINI. The Classic Mini Cooper, which would later become famous, broke down conventional class distinctions in the 1960s and became a cultural phenomenon.

After World War II, England’s gas costs skyrocketed in 1957, making many doubt the need for huge gas-guzzlers. The British Motor Company’s Morris Company’s principal engineer, Alec Issigonis, was charged with creating a compact, fuel-efficient vehicle that could accommodate four persons. Issigonis put the engine on its side and pushed the wheels out the corners to expand the interior space. This increased the cockpit’s size and improved the car’s maneuverability. The first Mini debuted in 1959. However, it was marketed as the Austin Seven and Morris Mini-Minor under Austin and Morris, the two major BMC brands. John Cooper started working with the brand and developing the Mini Cooper in 1961 when the Mini moniker first appeared.

Cooper became interested in the car when it gained a reputation as a standout performance vehicle due to its innovative layout. Its broad stance made it easy to maneuver, and the weight of the traverse engine on the front tires helped maintain balance and grip. It now has a more powerful engine, larger brakes, and several other tuning adjustments thanks to Cooper. The Classic Mini Cooper 997 was the result. The Cooper and the Cooper S performance version won the 1964 Monte Carlo Rally.

By 1969, Mini had become a recognized brand on a global scale, selling over 2 million cars. However, the brand left the United States in 1968, ironically because of strict new emissions regulations—the exact thing that gave rise to the brand in the first place.

BMW purchased the company in 1994. In 1999, the year the new MINI (yep, now in all capitals) was introduced at the Paris Auto Show, the final Classic Mini rolled off the assembly line. After BMW acquired the company in 2002, the brand won the 2003 North American Car of the Year award the following year. The brand is recognized for its cutting-edge technology, luxurious interiors, and ever-expanding portfolio of vehicles, including coupes, convertibles, two- and four-door variants, and small SUVs. All-wheel drivetrains and John Cooper Works performance editions are available for most vehicles.
