The 2023 Volvo XC60 Hybrid has a beautiful design,

The 2023 Volvo XC60 is Volvo’s mainstay SUV since it competes in the highly popular small luxury class. Fortunately for Volvo, the XC60 is a nice, firmly competitive vehicle that ranks among our top-recommended options in its class. The XC60’s most appealing feature is its excellent plug-in hybrid “Recharge” option. There’s no premium small SUV plug-in hybrid we’d prefer to have 36 miles of range, a powerful electric motor, and gobs of power from the gasoline engine.

Of all, many of the XC60’s other features are what make it so appealing. The 2022 upgrade to the vehicle’s infotainment system gives it a top-tier range of technological options. It’s difficult to find the outside style objectionable. Who doesn’t like a beautiful Swedish-style interior? Wool upholstery is even available! One of our editors was so impressed with the XC60 that he purchased one, so there’s a genuine recommendation coming direct from our pockets.

The XC60 will not cut corners as well as a BMW X3 or Mercedes-Benz GLC when compared to comparable small luxury SUVs. Furthermore, the Polestar Engineered performance variant is dubious since it lacks extra power and has manually adjustable dampers – yes, you have to twist the knob yourself. Yet, these aren’t dealbreakers, and considering the huge rear seat and baggage space, agreeable driving qualities, and good fuel efficiency, the elegant XC60 is an unmissable alternative.

What is new in 2023?

Volvo is revamping its trim naming scheme for 2023. Instead of the classic Momentum, R-Design, and Inscription choices, purchasers now have Core, Plus, and Ultimate to choose from. Also, the number of option packages has been decreased and grouped.

The more significant revisions occurred last year for the 2022 model, when Volvo entirely redesigned the powertrain options, adding a mild-hybrid assist to the B5 and B6 models and making significant improvements to the Recharge plug-in hybrid. These improvements to the Recharge may be seen in our first driving tale from 2022.

What about the interior and in-car technologies of the XC60?

Volvo’s appealing and sophisticated exterior is echoed in its sleek and friendly interiors. The inside of the XC60 is tough to criticize, with quality materials and exquisite design from head to toe. Volvo’s Android Automotive infotainment package is Apple CarPlay compatible, but its integration with the Google suite of applications like Google Maps, Google Assistant, and the Google Play Store make a compelling argument for skipping the smartphone connection hardware entirely and utilizing the native interface. The infotainment system is responsive and well-integrated with the instrument cluster. You may select to display the Google Maps interface in the cluster, and the digital readouts for important information are easily accessible beside it.

The Volvo XC60 is a compact crossover that sits above the smaller XC40 and three rows below the XC90. It has the same proportions as other luxury European cars, such as the BMW X3, Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class, and Audi Q5, with a wheelbase of just under 113 inches and an overall length of about 185 inches. This so-called mini crossover has plenty of people- and cargo-carrying capabilities due to its mid-size wheelbase.

When comparing them, we discovered that the XC60 offers more rear seating space than the Germans, making it more family-friendly. We particularly enjoy the availability of Volvo’s premium compact booster seats. The XC60’s cargo space is average, neither class-leading nor redundant. Because the plug-in hybrid sits below the floor, the XC60 Recharge vehicles lose half a cubic foot of rear cargo space.

Specifications: fuel economy and performance in the Volvo XC60?

Volvo offers three powertrain options for the 2023 XC60, all based on the same 2.0-litre four-cylinder engine mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission. All “B” models include a 48-volt mild-hybrid system that improves efficiency, while the “Recharge” model is a plug-in hybrid system.

The base engine, known as the B5, is a turbocharged four-cylinder engine that makes 247 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. Volvo says it can go from 0 to 60 mph in 6.6 seconds. It gets 23 mpg city, 30 highway, 26 with front-wheel drive, and 23/29/25 with all-wheel drive.

The B6 is the next step, with a turbocharger and supercharger boosting output to 295 bhp and 310 lb-ft. The time from 0-60 is reduced to 5.9 seconds. B6s come standard with all-wheel drive and EPA ratings of 21 mpg city, 27 highway, and 23 combined.

The plug-in hybrid T8 eAWD powertrain, which features a 2.0-litre four-cylinder (without a supercharger) and an electric motor making 143 horsepower, is standard on Recharge variants. The recharge is rated at 455 horsepower and 523 pound-feet of torque. The time from 0-60 is reduced to 4.5 seconds. But versions made by Polestar keep the same power and add a lot of other performance improvements.

Both recharged models have an all-electric range of 36 miles and are rated at 28 mpg combined once that all-electric range is expended. We’ll add that the recharge model range and efficiency numbers are from the 2022 model, but there shouldn’t be any material differences for 2023 when this data is released.

What’s it like to drive the Volvo XC60?

With its exquisite seating and elegant design, the XC60’s cabin is heaven for commuters and road travellers. Top-of-the-line models have a lot of adjustable driver aids, like adaptive cruise control with lane centring, which can make long trips much less tiring.

The XC60 isn’t as roadblocking as other Volvo 60 and 90 models. Its larger optional wheels can make the ride quality a lot worse, especially in areas with bumpy pavement, and it hampered the standard suspension on our test road through the mountains. The takeaway should be that other Volvos are better to drive, smaller wheels are better, and most competitors handle better. This may sound terrible, but it isn’t. If you make the right choices, the XC60 will be fun to drive in 95% of the situations most drivers encounter.

Because of the electric boost, the B5 and B6 hybrids are smoother and better to drive than the original T5 and T6 powertrains, and although they are more refined than before, there are still smoother powertrains available in other vehicles. Meanwhile, the Recharge is a joy to drive because of its amazingly powerful electric motor. With 143 horsepower available, there’s no need to use the gas engine when you’re in EV mode. What’s more, the electric range of 36 miles on a full charge ensures that most trips can be completed without the need for any gasoline.

Polestar Engineered is the most fun renderer out there. It receives a revised suspension with unique Ohlins dampers and springs, 21-inch wheels (available with summer tires), larger brakes, and a new exterior styling package that gives the SUV more flare. Ohlins dampers can be manually adjusted, turning the XC60 into a stiffer SUV—and a firmer ride. Larger brakes improve stopping power,

And while there’s no extra revving from the engine, standard recharging doesn’t require it. This car accelerates to 60 mph in 4.5 seconds, which is an amazing amount of power for an SUV. If all you want is acceleration and a smooth ride, go for the Standard Recharge. If you’re a little weird and want an extra dose of confidence on a twisty road, go with Polestar Engineered.

What is the price of the 2023 XC60?

The 2023 Volvo XC60 begins at $44,745 plus $1,095 for the destination. Engine choices (B5, B6, and Recharge), trim levels (Core, Plus, and Ultimate), and the Recharge-only Polestar Engineered make up the model lineup.

Base Core models come with 18-inch alloy wheels, proximity entry, a power tailgate, blind-spot warning, cloth “textile” or leatherette seats, dual-zone climate control, a power-adjustable driver’s seat with lumbar adjustment, a power passenger seat, a panoramic sunroof, auto-dimming side mirrors, and an auto-dimming rearview mirror.

The price of a PHEV Recharge model starts at $58,495 and rises from there, with the same trim structure as the B5 model. Finally, the Polestar Engineered model is Volvo’s top-of-the-line vehicle.

AWD is an extra $2,300 on the B5 variants. Additionally, the B6 is only available in the “Ultimate” trim level.

What are the safety ratings and driver-aid features of the XC60?
